A man who suffered a cardiac arrest episode has a Good Samaritan to thank for his life.
The last thing Bryant Musser remembers is being at the red light by Mount Nittany Medical Center. That’s when E.M.Ts believe he suffered a cardiac arrest episode and his truck went down the hill near the hospital. A nurse heading out to breakfast with a friend happened to drive by right after and that has made all the difference.
Bryant Musser had the chance to meet Shirley Karduck, the nurse who performed CPR on him for 6 minutes by the road.
“Looking at his color, I honestly though I wasn’t even going to start CPR but you do what you have to do,” says Karduck, a registered nurse. “I honestly thought he wasn’t going to make it.”
But Musser did survive and many people, like Musser and his wife Jody, are grateful she was in the area at that time.
“Thanks; I probably wouldn’t be here otherwise,” Musser said from his hospital bed one day after the incident.
“It kind of just gives you goose pimples to think all those things came together to help one person – a very important person to us,” adds Jody Musser, Bryant’s wife for over forty years.
Without Karduck’s and other citizens’ fast reactions, things could have gone very differently.
“When we found out what happened to him is something that people don’t usually come out of, we’re thinking the stars were aligned,” says Jody.
Paramedics who arrived at the scene are also crediting Karduck for her quick thinking.
“Getting CPR started very quickly definitely improved his survivability,” says Eliza Sham, an E.M.T with Centre LifeLink.
For Karduck, this is an event she’ll always remember.
“I’ve been a nurse for 30 years,” says Karduck. “This is probably the most important thing I’ve done.”
Two other men stopped to pull Musser from his car after it crashed. One of those men stopped by today to check on him as well.
